From a simple building in the 10th Century, to its present day structure, St Stephen's still retains much of the charm of the original fabric whilst providing modern amenities for today's parishioners. St Stephen's is an "ancient parish". It extends south from the bottom of St Stephen's Hill and Holywell Hill to the A405 and along the A405 on the western side to the Ml. Two thirds of the parish is rural with several working farms, and the population is concentrated in St Albans and Chiswell Green. The church is not in St Stephen's civil parish although Chiswell Green is. The civil parish covers the original ancient parish, now largely the ecclesiastical parishes of Frogmore and Bricket Wood. Other Churches
There is a strong Churches Together in St Albans and a South St Albans Interchurch Group which includes St Bartholomew's RC, Chiswell Green URC and a small Christadelphian Church. Leaflets advertising services are delivered at Christmas and Easter. On Good Friday there is a united procession of witness starting from a different church each year and we are invited to share in the Easter Vigil at St Bartholomew's. On Pentecost Sunday there is a joint evening service and in late June/July there is a Songs of Praise in the URC. Every Friday, morning prayer is said alternately at St Stephen's and St Bartholomew's. Other events are also arranged together.
